Day 3 - Grand Teton
|
Sunday
morning we slept in.
The kids had in room cereal, then we hit the road at
around 10:30 or
so. We eventually
made our way through
Twin Falls, Idaho – must have taken over an hour to travel
the 40 miles to Twin
Falls and then navigate slowly through town.
Saw a Sonic burger, and Dusty decided we’d find
another one for
lunch. We crossed
over the Snake River Canyon but
didn’t stop – I assumed we’d see the Snake River
plenty and find better places to stop.
Reached
Pocatello
and
couldn’t find a Sonic burger, so we settled for
Wendy’s. Reached
Idaho Falls
– the only other significant town we’d seen in Idaho
other than Twin
Falls.
Thirty miles or so outside Idaho Falls it
started to get scenic as the
foothills of the Tetons emerged.
In Swan
Valley
we cross the Snake River
for the last time and
headed up into the hills. We
stopped at Teton
Pass
to take a few pictures, then headed into Jackson. Overall we
weren’t too impressed with Idaho. Nicer than Nevada,
but no casinos and nothing worth
stopping for.

In
Jackson
we made a quick stop to buy ice, then parked the van near downtown and
started
shopping. Dusty bought 2 Teton Brewing
company T-Shirts, Kathy got a moose T-shirt, CJ got one that
said
Feed
the Bears
Walk up and pet the Moose
Let your kids ride the Buffaloes
Drive fast and pass on curves
We thank you for your support... Yellowstone Paramedics
Robby
got one with
a sign that said ‘don’t
feed the bears’ and a bear wearing antlers, holding a sign
that said ‘I am not a
bear’. After asking a local we had
dinner at Mile High Pizza Pie, then headed into Teton National Park. Found Jackson
Lake Lodge – which is
really about a
couple of miles from Jackson Lake - and checked
in. There are about 48 rooms in the
lodge itself, presumably with views.
There are also hundreds of ‘cottages’ (read: motel
rooms), none of which
have views. At dusk we headed over to
the back of the Lodge, which overlooks the meadow, the lake, and the
mountains. Well over a hundred others
were there as well, and eventually we were all rewarded with a sighting
of over
50 elk around half a mile away in the meadow.
We thought we saw a moose in the distance as well, and the kids saw a
moose near the lodge below us that disappeared.
